Screening Locations

Screening Centres Are Plentiful

So you’re ready to be screened. Terrific, there’s no shortage of clinics to visit. The BC Cancer Agency’s Screening Mammography Program (SMP) has permanent screening mammography centres in most large BC communities, offering year-round appointments. For those in or near rural centres, SMP provides mobile services to over 150 BC communities.

Friendly, Caring, and Comfortable

Everyone knows someone who feels uncomfortable visiting a hospital or clinic, and sometimes this stops them from making and keeping check-ups. This is certainly not the case with screening mammogram centres, which are designed to be as welcoming, comfortable, and as non-clinical as possible. Plus, all the centres and mobile services are accredited. So you receive the same high-quality care no matter which location you visit.

Yes, You DO Have Time

A screening appointment only takes about 15 minutes. And since appointments are even booked every 15 minutes, you can be in and out in no time. That’s less time than many people spend wandering around book stores or shopping for groceries.

Booking Your Screening

Arranging an appointment is easy. Permanent screening mammography centres book appointments all year for your convenience.

  1. Call 1-888-GO-HAVE-1 and ask for a location that’s most convenient for you
  2. Or look for and call a location closest to you.
  3. Book your appointment at a time that works for you.

The friendly staff at each centre will answer any and all of your questions and concerns.

If you live in a rural community and cannot make it into a major city for a screening, there are mobile screening units. This unit program sets up temporary clinics in health centres and malls in over 150 BC communities.

GOHAVE1 now.

    Hi Marlene,

It’s true that currently, at some screening centres, there is a wait for an appointment-and some waits longer than others. Regardless of the wait time, the goal is to book an appointment and have your mammogram. And,t hink about it like this. If your dentist says you can’t come in for your six month cleaning/checkup right at the six month date, and if you have to wait some weeks before that appointment is available, you don’t worry, do you?

If you are concerned about something different you notice in your breasts, just call your doctor and an appointment will be found for you very quickly. And, you may want to check with other screening centres to see if you can get an earlier appointment.

Women in the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley who would prefer an earlier appointment than the one available at their nearest centre can request that SMP search for an earlier appointment at the next nearest location when they’re booking their appointment by calling 1-888-GOHAVE1.

You don’t have to have a doctor’s referral. You can certainly book your own appointment. If you have noticed anything abnormal with your breasts or have any concerns, then certainly you should make an appointment to see your doctor, and then have a mammogram.

Excellent question! Thanks for asking! Let us know how you’re doing.

    Patricia,

You’re so right! If you have implants you need to have a doctor’s referral. This is very important. It may be more difficult to view breast tissue when implants are present. Special positioning and possibly additional images are required.

    Carol-Ann,
Now is a great time to make your appointment!

Man, I looked everywhere in this site to find a location nearest me and couldn’t find helpful guidance under this section called WHERE TO HAVE 1. What a waste of time. I’m not getting a mammogram if it means having to work at finding a location. Thanks but no thanks.

Eve, don’t let having to find a location put you off of what could be the most important appointment of your life. We don’t list specific locations, but instead recommend you phone 1-888-GO-HAVE-1 and ask for a location that’s most convenient for you. They’ll help you find a nearby location and book an appointment.

Please don’t let a little frustration turn you off from getting your mammogram. Call the number and book your appointment.

    Hi Kathleen,

Have you tried the main 1-888-GO-HAVE-1 phone number? They should be able to help you out. If they’re busy, it’s definitely worth it to keep trying. Right now there is no way to book an appointment online. It’s a great idea though, so I’ll pass it along! In the mean time, please keep trying. It’s so importnant.

    Hi there,

This is why there is the 1-888-GO-HAVE-1 phone number. They’ll help you by telling you the location closest to you and the hours, and help you book an appointment. It’s a one-stop-shop method!

If you would rather look up locations on our own, there is the http://www.smpbc.ca website you can visit. Simply go there and select “Locations” on the left side of your screen.

    Good luck and good health!

    Hi Arissa,
You may want to ask your doctor for another assessment and discuss your concerns with him. Your doctor can recommend you have a mammogram or at least an x-ray to see what is happening. Your doctor may feel that what you are experiencing is a pulled muscle, perhaps. Any way you can see another doctor for a second opinion?
